Loving la Vida Local
Popped into Portobello East Market at the Burroughs Building to shop local indie fashion yesterday. Fell in love a few times with some fresh designers.
My new favourite thing is a huge flower cocktail ring from mixed media jewellert designer, Kari Lynn Bianchi. Kari Lynn's work relies on mostly handmade clay to create sculptural shapes and forms which are then painted and glazed, resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces heavy on impact and charm. Her necklaces (top photo) evoke Marni's weighty collars of recent seasons.
Meanwhile Pricila Gomes takes crochet to another level with her astounding knit pieces. Pricila experiements with shapes very well on everything from knit jackets, tops, shrugs and dresses. Check out her site for yourself - there's even a knit corset!
Ilona Hassan's silk blouses (bottom photo) are the perfect base coat to a daytime or evening outfit. The camisoles and t-shirts come in delicious colours and offer a subtle stretch that makes it much more wearable - and comfortable - for layering.
Portobello East's monthly design and art market seems to be finding its niche here in Toronto since expanding from Vancouver this summer. Admission is free and each month features new and returning designers. Portobello East occurs on the last Sunday of the month - next market is October 25th.
